What Is Edge Grinding & Polishing?

Although edge grinding and edge polishing are often mentioned together, they are two separate finishing steps with different purposes. Depending on the application, glass edges can be ground only or further polished after grinding.

Edge Grinding
Utilizing diamond abrasive wheels to remove sharp, raw-cut edges. This mandatory step locks in exact CAD dimensions, forms specific profiles (like C-chamfers or R-corners), and physically eliminates dangerous sub-surface micro-cracks before tempering.

Edge Polishing
An optional finishing step utilizing soft resin wheels and cerium oxide slurry. It transforms the matte-ground perimeter into a fully transparent optical finish, preventing backlight bleeding and eliminating microscopic crevices for cleanroom environments.

Note: If your glass is hidden inside a mechanical housing, grinding is sufficient. Polishing is only required for exposed edges to improve aesthetics, light transmission, and tactile smoothness.

What Edge Processing Matters?

Proper edge processing directly affects the strength, fit, safety, and appearance of custom glass parts. A well-finished edge helps reduce breakage risks, improve assembly accuracy, and ensure reliable performance during strengthening and long-term use.

Operational Safety
Removes sharp edges to improve safety during handling, assembly, and user interaction.

Micro-Crack Control
Reduces edge defects and sub-surface damage caused by cutting, helping prevent crack propagation.

Strengthening Yield
Prepares the glass edge before thermal tempering or chemical strengthening, reducing the risk of breakage during processing.

Assembly Precision
Controls the final perimeter dimensions for accurate fitting into frames, bezels, seals, housings, and flush-mounted structures.

Bonding & Sealing
Creates a more consistent edge surface for adhesives, gaskets, waterproof sealing, and structural bonding designs.

Final Appearance
Improves visible edge clarity, smoothness, and tactile feel for exposed edges and frameless glass designs.

Engineering Note: Dimensional Compensation for Thermal Tempering If your custom glass requires physical (thermal) tempering, the extreme heat treatment causes the material to expand by approximately 0.2%. To guarantee your final product precisely matches your CAD tolerances, our engineering team calculates a strict shrinkage allowance. During the CNC grinding phase, we intentionally machine the glass slightly undersized to perfectly compensate for this thermal expansion.

Compatible Glass Materials

Edge finishing is not determined by material alone. The right choice depends on the glass type, edge visibility, assembly method, optical requirements, and whether thermal or chemical strengthening is required. In general, hidden edges usually require grinding or chamfering, while exposed, optical, or premium visible parts benefit from polished or optically polished edges.

Design Guidelines for Glass Edge Grinding & Polishing

Seven Decisions for Better Edge Finishing
Edge finishing should be considered early in custom glass projects, from design review and quotation to process planning. As a custom glass manufacturer, we help evaluate edge type, safety chamfers, polishing needs, strengthening allowance, and assembly conditions to reduce breakage risk, control cost, and support reliable production.
Request Review

Specify the Required Edge Finish
Every cut glass edge should be ground or safety-finished, regardless of the cutting method. Specify whether the part needs a safety smooth, matte ground, polished, or custom edge profile.

Define Safety Chamfers Clearly
Safety angles or chamfers should be shown on the drawing when required. Clear chamfer details improve handling safety, assembly reliability, and user protection.

Use Matte Ground Edges for Hidden Areas
For edges hidden inside frames, bezels, housings, or adhesive structures, matte grinding is usually the most cost-effective option. It removes sharpness without adding unnecessary polishing cost.

Do Not Assume CNC Edges Are Polished
CNC grinding normally produces a matte edge. A clear, glossy, or premium visible edge requires an additional polishing process, which increases processing time and cost.

Match the Edge Finish to the Application
Hidden edges usually need safety grinding or chamfering. Visible, touchable, frameless, optical, or premium appearance edges should be polished for better clarity, smoothness, and tactile feel.

Confirm Critical Details During Drawing Review
Edge type, chamfer, tolerance, polishing requirement, strengthening process, and assembly method should be reviewed early to avoid rework, cost changes, breakage risk, or fit issues later.

Consider Tempering Allowance Early
For thermally tempered glass, slight dimensional expansion should be considered during size planning. The glass size may need to be adjusted in advance to allow for tempering expansion.

Quality Control for Glass Edge Grinding & Polishing

For display cover glass and cover lens applications, edge quality directly affects appearance, dimensional fit, strengthening yield, bonding reliability, and long-term durability. We inspect each part based on the drawing, tolerance, edge finish, cosmetic standard, and downstream process requirements.
